For EU, EEA and Swiss citizens

Your NIE on Gran Canaria: residents, non-residents and the desk for each

Moving to Gran Canaria? Your NIE comes inside your residence papers. Only buying, inheriting or signing a contract here? Then form EX-15 requests the bare number, at Calle Luis Doreste Silva 68 in the city or the Comisaría de Maspalomas in the south. The Policía Nacional assigns this Número de Identidad de Extranjero, and it stays yours for life.

People who settle receive it inside their papers

If you are moving to Gran Canaria, the number normally arrives with your residence document, not on its own. With a European passport (EU, EEA or Swiss), you see it on your green certificate. Everyone else receives it along with the visa or authorisation, and it reappears later on the TIE, the residence card for non-EU nationals.

So a designer settling near Las Canteras, a cook with a contract in a Playa del Inglés hotel or a student at the university does not usually book a separate NIE appointment. They book their residence procedure, and the number comes with it.

Keeping your home abroad: the EX-15 request

Someone who lives in another country but has business in Spain requests the number on its own, using form EX-15. Typical cases: an apartment bought in Arguineguín, a share of a family house in Telde, a company being set up, a short work contract.

On the EX-15 you write your passport details, a postal address and why you are asking. The reason must be real and backed by a paper: a deposit contract, a letter from a notary, a job offer. One form covers several requests, among them certificates of residence and non-residence, so mark only the one you came for.

What goes in the folder

  • EX-15, with your signature at the bottom
  • Passport, plus a copy of the photo page
  • Evidence of your reason: a deposit contract, a notary’s letter, a job offer
  • The 790-012, stamped by the bank or paid online
  • The confirmation of your cita previa, the booking you made online, on paper or on screen

Luis Doreste Silva, the south, or a consulate

In the city, the police directory on policia.es places the NIE (certificados y asignación de NIE) at Calle Luis Doreste Silva 68, 35004 Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, phone 928 304 667. The police e-office calls this address “Comisaría de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Centro”, so do not be surprised to see that name on your booking.

In the south, the Comisaría de Maspalomas, Avenida de Moya 4 in San Bartolomé de Tirajana (928 730 447), and the Comisaría de Santa Lucía de Tirajana, on Calle Escorial at the corner of Calle Dr. Negrín, have NIE procedures in their entries too. People living abroad can also hand the EX-15 to the Spanish consulate that serves their region.

None of these police offices publishes opening hours. Go by the hour written on your booking.

Questions

Can I live on the island with just a NIE?

No. The number identifies you and nothing more. Living on Gran Canaria depends on your passport: registration for Europeans, a visa or authorisation for everyone else.

I was given a NIE in Madrid years ago. Do I need another for the island?

No. The number is national and never changes. If an office wants proof of it, you can ask for a NIE certificate.

Does the tax office use the NIE too?

Yes. For a foreigner, the NIE also serves as the Spanish tax identification number, so it appears on tax returns, deeds and invoices.

NIE Maspalomas: can I get the number in the south?

Yes. The police directory places NIE procedures at both stations of the south, Maspalomas and Santa Lucía de Tirajana. Book under the province of Las Palmas and check which office your confirmation names.
